Performathon 2017: Final Report

This year’s Performathon was a great success. With the help of our wonderful students, parents, and neighbors, we are humbled to have raised $11,135 to benefit the need and talent scholarship programs of the community school.

About Performathon: This gala day of student musical performances and art exhibits is scheduled every two years. Performathon is the major fundraising event for CSA scholarship programs.  These programs provide vital aid to students in financial need and to talented young people to pursue their study of the arts.  Since 1993, over $90,000 has been raised, and nearly 1,000 students have received scholarship support.

How Performathon Worked: CSA Students signed up early in the year to perform and raise money for Performathon. Each student who agreed to play sent out pledge sheets to their family, friends, and neighbors.  It was through these pledges that we raised over half the money for this fund raiser.  Our sincere thanks to all our students who played and sent out pledge forms, and to all of the wonderful friends and family who sent in donations!

On April 22: The doors opened at 10:00 a.m. when we kicked off the art gallery, music sale, bake sale, raffle and silent auction.  Performances were scheduled throughout the day with a morning recital beginning at 11 a.m. and an afternoon recital beginning at 1:30 p.m. on the Boutell Memorial Concert Hall stage.

Accompanists Yurong Yang and Linc Smelser rehearsed ahead of time to prepare performers for the big day.  Host Ann Montzka Smelser introduced each performer during the performances.  Many other volunteers worked at various tables during the day to manage purchases.

Bake Sale:  Organized by Karyn Harrelson and stocked by many wonderful CSA parents the bake sale had an amazing array of tasty baked goods that sold like crazy!

Music Swap: The Concert Hall lobby became a grand bazaar of used music (and other music related items) that were donated by people in the community and NIU School of Music faculty. Folks were encouraged to grab a bag, stuff it with sheet music, and make a donation.

Silent Auction: A silent auction was held that included a painted violin, a flute, an electric guitar, a clarinet, and a quilt made from past Performathon t-shirts, all items donated to Performathon.

Raffle: Wonderful prizes were donated by local businesses and were on display throughout the day.  Tickets were placed in bags during the day, and winning tickets were drawn at the end of the day. See below for all the raffle prizes and winners!

Performathon Advisory Committee: The members of this year’s committee were Alicia Tobin, Tamara Farrell, Ann Montzka Smelser, Karyn Harrelson, Julie Breidenbach, Heidi Kuehl, Yuko Asada, and Eric Schroeder.  The committee met monthly from late fall until the event, and were instrumental in providing amazing insight, advice and guidance.  They also volunteered on the day of the event and made sure everything ran like a well-oiled machine.  We cannot thank them enough for their service!
